Physalis seeds
€2.95
Physalis (Physalis peruviana) — (approx. 20 seeds per packet) is a unique heirloom fruiting plant native to South America and well suited to Ireland’s cool summers when grown in a sunny, sheltered spot or polytunnel. Also known as Cape Gooseberry or Goldenberry, it produces lantern-like papery husks enclosing bright orange fruits with a sweet-tart, tropical flavour — a delightful mix of pineapple and tomato. The fruits are rich in vitamin C and antioxidants, perfect for eating fresh, dipping in chocolate, or making jams and chutneys.
Physalis grows 60–100 cm tall and forms a bushy habit with heart-shaped leaves and delicate yellow flowers. It thrives in full sun and well-drained, fertile soil, showing surprising resilience in cooler climates. Once established, it’s highly productive, yielding dozens of fruit-filled lanterns per plant from midsummer to the first frosts. As with all Earthling vegetables, this is an open-pollinated heirloom variety — valued for flavour, diversity, and seed-saving potential.
⚠️ Note: Unripe fruits and green plant parts contain solanine and are toxic if ingested. Always eat only fully ripe, golden-orange fruits.

Sowing instructions
Seeds are small and should be sown indoors from February to April, about 0.5 cm deep in moist, peat-free compost. Keep warm (20–25 °C) until germination (7–14 days). Pot on when seedlings are large enough to handle, then plant out after the last frost, spacing 45–60 cm apart in full sun. Harvest fruits only when the husks have dried and turned papery — underripe fruits should not be eaten. Store seeds cool and dry until sowing.
⚠️ Note: Unripe fruits and green plant parts contain solanine and are toxic if ingested. Always eat only fully ripe, golden-orange fruits.
