Sorrel seeds

Price

€2.95

Sorrel (Rumex acetosa)(approx. 80 seeds per packet) is a hardy perennial herb native to Europe and naturalised throughout Ireland, valued for its tangy, lemon-flavoured leaves that bring a refreshing brightness to salads, soups, and sauces. Growing 30–60 cm tall, it forms a clump of arrow-shaped leaves and sends up slender flower spikes in early summer. Sorrel is among the first greens to appear in spring and one of the last to fade, making it a reliable and nutritious addition to any edible garden.

Thriving in full sun to partial shade, sorrel prefers moist, fertile, well-drained soil and benefits from regular harvesting to encourage tender new growth. Once established, it’s resilient and self-seeds gently, offering years of flavour and productivity from a single sowing. Its deep roots help improve soil structure and support a healthy, living ecosystem.

Sowing instructions

Seeds are small and easy to handle. Sow outdoors from March to June, 1 cm deep in rows or patches, or under cover from February for earlier harvests. Keep moist until germination (10–14 days). Thin seedlings to 25–30 cm apart once large enough to handle. Harvest young leaves as needed, and cut back flower stalks to prolong leaf production. Store seeds cool and dry until sowing.
