Sweet Pea Seeds - Perennial
€2.95
Perennial Sweet Pea, also called Everlasting Pea (Lathyrus latifolius), is offered here as a seed packet of approximately 15 seeds (0.8g). Unlike the annual sweet pea, this is a long-lived climber that dies back each winter and returns from its roots every spring, scrambling 1.5 to 2 m up fences, trellises and hedges. From midsummer into early autumn it carries clusters of rosy pink to magenta flowers, sometimes white, which bumblebees love. It has little of the annual's scent, but makes up for it in toughness: once established it handles drought and poor soil, and as a legume it fixes nitrogen with the help of soil bacteria. A low-maintenance climber for wildlife gardens, hedgerows and food forest edges across Ireland and the UK.

Growing Instructions
Soak seeds overnight in warm water or nick the hard seed coat before sowing. Sow 1 to 2 cm deep in peat-free compost, indoors from February to April or outdoors in spring or autumn. Germination can take 2 to 4 weeks. Plant out after the last frost, 30 to 45 cm apart, with something to climb. Plants usually flower well from their second year, then return every spring. Store seeds cool and dry until sowing. Note: seeds and pods are poisonous if eaten, so keep them away from children and pets.
