Calendula (Calendula officinalis)(approx. 40 seeds per packet) is a cheerful, easy-to-grow annual herb native to southern Europe and widely naturalised throughout Ireland. It grows 30–50 cm tall and produces a profusion of bright orange or golden daisy-like flowers from early summer until the first frosts. The petals are edible, with a mild, peppery flavour, and are often used fresh in salads or dried for herbal teas and natural skincare preparations.

Calendula thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, tolerating poor ground and cool conditions with ease. It’s beloved by pollinators and beneficial insects, especially hoverflies and ladybirds, making it a valuable companion in vegetable gardens and regenerative plantings. Deadheading regularly encourages continual flowering throughout the season.

Sowing instructions

Seeds are curved and ridged, easy to handle, and germinate readily. Sow directly outdoors from March to May, or under cover from February onwards for earlier blooms. Cover lightly with fine compost and keep moist until germination (7–14 days). Thin or transplant seedlings to 20–30 cm apart once large enough to handle. Store seeds cool and dry until sowing.⚠️ Note: Lupin seeds and pods are toxic if ingested. Handle with care and keep away from children and pets.
