Aubretia (Aubrieta deltoidea)(approx. 100 seeds per packet) is a low-growing, evergreen perennial native to southern Europe, loved for its vibrant spring colour and ability to cascade beautifully over walls, rockeries, and garden borders. Growing 10–15 cm tall and spreading up to 40 cm wide, it forms a dense mat of small grey-green leaves covered in masses of purple, pink, or blue flowers from March to May, providing an early nectar source for bees.

Aubretia thrives in full sun and well-drained, moderately fertile soil, preferring a position where it can trail or spill naturally. Once established, it’s hardy, drought-tolerant, and long-lived, creating a colourful, living carpet that suppresses weeds and brightens the spring garden.

Sowing instructions

Seeds are fine and should be sown from February to May under cover or directly outdoors in late spring. Scatter lightly over the surface of moist compost and press gently without covering, as light aids germination. Keep at 15–20 °C and maintain even moisture. Germination usually occurs within 2–3 weeks. Transplant seedlings to 20–30 cm spacing. Store seeds cool and dry until sowing.
