Apple tree - Blood of the Boyne

Price

€26.95

The Blood of the Boyne Apple Tree (Malus domestica ‘Blood of the Boyne’), grafted onto M26 rootstock, is a semi-dwarf, deciduous fruit tree that typically grows to 3–4 metres tall, making it perfect for smaller gardens, orchards, or food forests. This Irish heritage apple produces medium to large, deep crimson fruits with a crisp, juicy texture and a balanced sweet-tart flavour. The apples ripen from late September to early October and are excellent for eating fresh, baking, or juicing.

The tree thrives in full sun and moist, well-drained, moderately fertile soil. It is hardy in Ireland’s cool temperate climate and shows good resistance to common apple diseases such as scab and canker. While not self-fertile, it will crop best when planted near another apple variety from pollination group 2 or 3 (for example, Discovery or James Grieve). Its spring blossoms attract bees and other pollinators, making it a valuable addition to both productive and wildlife-friendly gardens.

Growing Instructions

Plant in full sun in fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. Water regularly during the first year after planting and during dry spells. Apply compost or well-rotted manure as a mulch each spring to feed the soil and retain moisture. Stake young trees to support the semi-dwarf rootstock and maintain upright growth.

Prune in winter to remove dead, crossing, or overcrowded branches, shaping the tree to maintain airflow and encourage fruiting. Harvest apples in late September to early October when fully coloured and easily detached from the branch. Enjoy fresh, use in desserts, or press for juice.
