Egyptian Walking Onions
€4.95
Egyptian Walking Onion (Allium × proliferum) is a hardy perennial onion that typically grows up to 60 cm tall, supplied here as a set of 3 bulbs ready to plant, named for its unusual habit of producing clusters of small bulbils at the top of each flower stalk. As the stalks bend under their weight, the bulbils touch down and root, letting the plant slowly "walk" across a bed over the years. Both the bulbs and green tops have a mild onion flavour and are useful in the kitchen year-round. Low-maintenance and drought-tolerant once established, its scent is also thought to help repel unwanted pests. A fascinating, self-propagating addition to fruit tree guilds and food forests across Ireland and the UK.

Growing Instructions
Plant bulbs in full sun in well-drained, fertile soil. Egyptian Walking Onions are low-maintenance and drought-tolerant once established, needing little beyond occasional watering in dry spells. They are extremely easy to propagate: simply scatter a few bulbils around each autumn and new plants will take root on their own. Use as a companion planting around fruit trees, where their scent is thought to help deter pests.
