Elephant Garlic

Price

€6.95

Elephant Garlic (Allium ampeloprasum) is a large, perennial bulbous plant, supplied here as bulbs ready to plant, closer in relation to leeks than to true garlic. It produces huge bulbs up to 10cm across on plants reaching 90cm tall with broad, flat leaves, and, if left unharvested, impressive flower heads. Its flavour is notably milder and sweeter than ordinary garlic, making it popular with those who want the flavour without the bite. A productive, easy-to-grow choice for vegetable beds, edible gardens and permaculture plots across Ireland and the UK wanting a big, mellow-flavoured allium.

Growing Instructions

Plant individual cloves in autumn, in full sun and well-drained, fertile soil with plenty of organic matter, for a summer harvest. Water regularly during the growing season, but allow the soil to stay drier once the plant enters dormancy. Lift bulbs once the foliage yellows and dies back, curing them in a dry, airy spot before storing. Save your largest cloves to replant for next season's crop.
