Hollyhock
€6.95
Hollyhock (Alcea rosea) is a tall, biennial or short-lived perennial flowering plant that typically grows to 1.5–2.5 metres tall, producing large, showy flowers in a wide range of colours, including pink, red, white, yellow, and purple. Blooming from midsummer to early autumn, its flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, making it a valuable addition to both ornamental and wildlife-friendly gardens. Hollyhocks are particularly striking when grown against walls, fences, or in cottage garden-style plantings.
Hollyhock thrives in full sun and prefers well-drained, fertile soil enriched with organic matter. It is hardy in Ireland’s cool temperate climate and tolerates a variety of garden soils once established. This plant is ideal for food forests, pollinator gardens, and mixed borders, adding height, colour, and ecological value.

Growing Instructions
Space plants 45–60 cm apart to allow airflow and reduce disease risk. Water regularly during establishment and during dry periods, and apply a mulch of compost or leaf mould to retain soil moisture.
Support tall flower spikes with stakes to prevent flopping, especially in exposed sites. Remove spent flowers to encourage further blooming and tidy appearance. Hollyhocks may self-seed, providing future generations of plants, and their flowers support pollinators throughout the summer months.
