Juniper (Juniperus communis) is a hardy evergreen conifer, offered here as a young, well-rooted plant — supplied bare-root from November to March and as a potted plant the rest of the year. It forms dense, aromatic blue-green needle foliage, typically reaching 1 to 3 m, though it stays smaller on exposed or poor ground. Female plants bear distinctive blue-black berries with a resinous, piney flavour, traditionally used to season game, roasted vegetables, sauerkraut, marinades and preserves. Easy to grow once established, it copes well with poor, sandy or rocky soil where many other edible plants struggle. Its year-round structure and berries also provide valuable wildlife habitat and forage. A resilient, low-maintenance choice for exposed sites, forest gardens and wildlife-friendly planting in Irish and UK gardens.

Growing Instructions
Plant in full sun in free-draining soil, improving heavy ground with grit or organic matter if needed. Water while young plants establish; once rooted, Juniper is drought-tolerant and needs little feeding beyond an occasional spring mulch. Prune lightly only when needed, as it doesn't respond well to hard cutting back into old wood. Berries form on female plants and take more than one season to ripen to blue-black before harvesting. A hardy, low-maintenance choice for dry, exposed or low-fertility sites.
