Juniper (Juniperus communis) is a hardy evergreen conifer shrub or small tree that typically reaches 1–3 m tall, though it can remain smaller in exposed or poor soils. It forms dense, aromatic, blue-green needle-like foliage and, on female plants, produces distinctive blue-black berries that are used as a traditional culinary spice. The berries have a resinous, piney, slightly citrus flavour and can be used to season game, roasted vegetables, sauerkraut, marinades, sauces, herbal teas, and preserves. Growing Instructions
Plant in full sun in well-drained soil, avoiding heavy, waterlogged ground. Improve drainage if needed with grit, sand, or organic matter, and water regularly during dry spells while young plants are establishing. Once established, Juniper is drought tolerant and requires little feeding, though a light mulch of compost or leaf mould in spring can help support soil life and steady growth.
Prune lightly only when needed to remove dead, damaged, or overcrowded growth, as Juniper does not respond well to being cut hard back into old wood. Berries are produced on female plants and usually take more than one season to ripen, turning blue-black when ready to harvest. Its evergreen shelter, aromatic berries, wildlife habitat, and low-maintenance nature make it perfect for forest gardens, wildlife hedges, dry sunny banks, native-style gardens, and permaculture systems seeking hardy, resilient edible and medicinal plants.
