Kousa Dogwood

The Kousa Dogwood (Cornus kousa) is a small, deciduous tree that typically grows to 4–6 metres tall, forming a graceful, rounded canopy with layered branching. In late spring to early summer, it produces showy, star-shaped white flowers, followed by attractive, bright red, raspberry-like fruits in late summer to autumn. These edible fruits are sweet and can be eaten fresh or used in jams and preserves. Its striking autumn foliage, which turns shades of red and purple, adds seasonal interest to gardens and food forests.

Kousa Dogwood thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained, fertile soil. It is hardy in Ireland’s cool temperate climate and tolerates a range of garden soils once established. Its spring flowers attract bees and pollinators, while its fruits provide food for birds and wildlife. Kousa Dogwood is low-maintenance, ornamental, and a valuable addition to wildlife-friendly gardens, hedgerows, and permaculture plantings.

Growing Instructions

Plant in full sun or partial shade in fertile, well-drained soil enriched with compost or organic matter. Water regularly during the first year after planting to establish roots, and during dry spells in subsequent years. Apply a mulch of compost or leaf mould each spring to retain moisture and feed the soil.

Minimal pruning is required; remove dead, crossing, or damaged branches in late winter to maintain shape and airflow. Harvest fruits in late summer to early autumn when fully coloured and soft. Eat fresh, or use in jams, jellies, or desserts, and leave some fruits for wildlife.
