Victoria Plum Tree (Grafted on St. Julian A Rootstock) (Prunus domestica ‘Victoria’)

The Victoria Plum Tree (Prunus domestica ‘Victoria’), grafted onto St. Julian A rootstock, is a vigorous, deciduous fruit tree that typically grows to 3–5 metres tall, making it suitable for medium-sized gardens, orchards, or food forests. It produces beautiful white blossoms in spring, followed by large, oval-shaped fruits with dark red-purple skin and sweet, juicy golden flesh. Victoria plums are one of the most popular European plum varieties, prized for eating fresh, baking, and preserving. The fruits ripen from late August to early September.

The tree thrives in full sun and fertile, well-drained soil, performing particularly well in Ireland’s cool temperate climate. Victoria is partially self-fertile but will produce heavier crops if planted near another plum variety such as Opal or Czar. Its spring flowers attract bees and other pollinators, enhancing biodiversity in both productive and wildlife-friendly gardens.

Growing Instructions

Plant in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil enriched with compost or well-rotted organic matter. Water regularly during the first year after planting and during dry spells to support healthy establishment. Apply a mulch of compost each spring to retain soil moisture and feed the tree. Stake young trees if needed for support.

Prune in winter to remove dead, diseased, or crossing branches, and thin fruiting shoots to maintain good airflow and encourage larger, quality fruits. Harvest plums in late August to early September when fully coloured and slightly soft to the touch. Use fresh, in jams, preserves, desserts, or for cooking.
