Salmonberry
€14.95
The Salmonberry (Rubus spectabilis) is a hardy, deciduous shrub that typically grows to 2–3 metres tall, forming a dense, spreading thicket. In early spring, it produces striking pink to reddish flowers that attract bees and other pollinators. By late spring to early summer, the shrub develops soft, orange to red berries with a sweet, tart flavour, ideal for eating fresh, making jams, or adding to desserts. Its lush foliage and vibrant berries also provide food and shelter for birds and other wildlife.
Salmonberry thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, well-drained, fertile soil, although it tolerates a range of soil types once established. It is fully hardy and performs well in Ireland’s cool temperate climate. This shrub is low-maintenance, fast-growing, and a valuable addition to food forests, wildlife gardens, and permaculture systems. Salmonberry is self-fertile but benefits from planting multiple shrubs to increase fruit production.

Growing Instructions
Plant in full sun or partial shade in fertile, well-drained soil enriched with compost or organic matter. Water regularly during the first year after planting to establish roots, and during dry periods in subsequent years. Apply a mulch of compost or leaf mould each spring to retain moisture and feed the soil.
Prune lightly in late winter to remove dead, damaged, or overcrowded stems, maintaining airflow and encouraging vigorous new growth. Harvest berries in late spring to early summer when fully coloured and soft. Eat fresh, or use in jams, preserves, desserts, or smoothies, and leave some fruits for wildlife.
