Seaberry
€14.95
The Seaberry, or Sea Buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides), is a hardy, deciduous shrub that typically grows to 2–4 metres tall, forming a dense, thorny bush. In spring, it produces inconspicuous yellow flowers that are an early source of nectar for bees and pollinators. By late summer to autumn, it develops bright orange berries packed with vitamin C, antioxidants, and other nutrients, making them ideal for juices, jams, oils, and nutritional supplements.
Seaberry thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, tolerating poor, sandy, or nutrient-deficient soils once established. It is exceptionally hardy and wind-tolerant, performing well in Ireland’s cool temperate climate. As a nitrogen-fixing plant, Seaberry enriches the soil naturally, improving fertility for surrounding plants—a valuable trait in permaculture gardens, food forests, and hedgerows. Its dense growth provides shelter and nesting sites for birds and wildlife, while the berries attract pollinators and other beneficial insects. Seaberry is dioecious, so plant both male and female shrubs for fruit production.

Growing Instructions
Plant in full sun in well-drained soil, enriched with compost or organic matter if available. Water regularly during the first year to establish a strong root system. Apply a mulch of compost or leaf mould each spring to retain moisture and feed the soil.
Prune lightly in late winter to remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches and to maintain airflow and shape. Harvest berries in late summer to early autumn when fully orange and slightly soft. Use fresh, in juices, jams, preserves, or oils, or leave some berries on the shrub to feed wildlife. This nitrogen-fixing shrub will continue to improve soil fertility while supporting pollinators and ecological diversity.
