Mallow (Malva sylvestris) is a hardy, herbaceous perennial in the Malvaceae family, native to Europe and well-adapted to Irish conditions. Both the leaves and flowers are edible and have been used traditionally in herbal remedies and cooking.

Growing Instructions

Mallow prefers full sun but will tolerate partial shade and grows well in a wide range of soils, as long as they are well-drained.

It self-seeds readily and can naturalise in garden spaces if not deadheaded, though it’s not invasive. Cut back after flowering to encourage a second flush and prevent legginess. A beautiful and useful addition to wildlife-friendly gardens, cottage borders, or herbal polycultures.
