Oerprei Leek
€9.95
Oerprei Leek (Allium ampeloprasum ‘Oerprei’) is a hardy perennial leek that typically reaches 60–80 cm tall, forming clumps of upright, blue-green leaves and pale, leek-like stems. An old Belgian perennial vegetable, it has a mild, sweet flavour somewhere between leek and onion, with the leaves and stems used in soups, stews, stir-fries, omelettes, gratins, or anywhere you would use a traditional leek. Oerprei is easy to grow and is ideal for gardeners of all experience levels, providing a reliable, low-maintenance perennial allium for vegetable gardens, edible borders, forest gardens, and permaculture plantings.
Oerprei Leek thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers fertile, well-drained soil enriched with compost or well-rotted organic matter. It is fully hardy in Ireland’s cool temperate climate and can remain in the garden for many years, multiplying gradually by forming offsets around the parent plant. Its perennial nature, excellent flavour, and ability to provide repeated harvests make it a valuable choice for resilient edible landscapes and low-input food production.

Growing Instructions
Plant in full sun or partial shade in well-drained, fertile soil enriched with compost or well-rotted organic matter. Water regularly during dry spells, especially while establishing young plants, and apply a mulch of compost, leaf mould, or woodchip each spring to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and nourish the soil.
Harvest leaves and stems as needed, cutting above the base to allow regrowth, or lift and divide clumps when they become crowded. Oerprei may die back or slow its growth in summer before returning strongly in cooler weather, and established plants can be divided to create new plantings. Its mild leek-onion flavour, perennial habit, and low-maintenance nature make it perfect for kitchen gardens, no-dig beds, forest gardens, and permaculture systems seeking reliable perennial vegetables.
