Pear Tree

The Pear Tree (Pyrus communis), grafted onto quince rootstock, is a compact, deciduous fruit tree that typically grows to 3–4 metres tall, making it ideal for smaller gardens, orchards, or food forests. It produces fragrant white blossoms in spring, followed by medium to large, sweet and juicy fruits in late summer to early autumn. Pears have a smooth texture and a well-balanced flavour, perfect for eating fresh, poaching, or making preserves.

This pear variety thrives in full sun and moist, well-drained, fertile soil. It is hardy and productive in Ireland’s cool temperate climate and tolerates typical garden pests and diseases well when properly cared for. While not self-fertile, it will crop best when planted near another pear variety from the same pollination group. Its spring flowers attract bees and pollinators, supporting biodiversity in both productive and wildlife-friendly gardens.

Growing Instructions

Plant in full sun in fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. Water regularly during the first year after planting and during dry spells. Apply compost or well-rotted manure as a mulch each spring to enrich the soil and retain moisture. Stake young trees to support the rootstock and maintain an upright growth habit.

Prune in winter to remove dead, crossing, or overcrowded branches, and to shape the tree for optimal airflow and fruiting. Harvest pears in late summer to early autumn when they are fully coloured and slightly firm. Allow some varieties to ripen off the tree for best flavour. Use fresh, poached, or in preserves and desserts.
