Red berried elder tree
€14.95
he Red Berried Elder Tree (Sambucus racemosa) is a hardy, deciduous shrub or small tree that typically grows to 3–6 metres tall, forming a rounded, spreading canopy. In spring, it produces clusters of small, creamy-white flowers that attract bees and other pollinators. By early summer, bright red berries develop in dense clusters, providing a striking visual display and an important food source for birds and wildlife.
Red Berried Elder thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, well-drained, moderately fertile soil. It is fully hardy and performs well in Ireland’s cool temperate climate, tolerating a variety of soils once established. The berries are not usually eaten raw due to their astringent taste, but can be cooked to make jams, jellies, syrups, or wines. This elder is an excellent addition to food forests, wildlife gardens, hedgerows, and permaculture systems, supporting biodiversity and seasonal interest.

Growing instructions
Plant in full sun or partial shade in well-drained soil enriched with compost or leaf mould. Water regularly during the first year to establish a strong root system, and during dry periods thereafter. Apply a mulch of compost or organic matter each spring to retain moisture and feed the soil.
Minimal pruning is required; remove dead or damaged branches in late winter to maintain a healthy structure and open canopy. Harvest berries in early summer when fully red and ripe. Cook before consumption for jams, jellies, syrups, or wines, or leave some on the tree to provide food for wildlife.
