Goat Willow (Salix caprea), also known as Pussy Willow, is a native deciduous tree in the Salicaceae family. It typically grows up to 10 metres tall and is known for its soft, silvery catkins in early spring, which provide an important early source of pollen for bees. It has broad, rounded leaves and a rugged, spreading form.

Growing Instructions

Goat Willow grows best in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, well-drained or even damp soils, though it tolerates poorer or heavier ground.

It grows quickly and can spread by seed or suckering, so regular pruning may be needed to keep it in check. While not aggressively invasive, it’s best planted with space to grow. Its ecological value is high—supporting insects, birds, and other wildlife—making it ideal for wild edges, riparian zones, or regenerative planting schemes.
