Cornelian Cherry (Cornus mas)

Price

€14.95

The Cornelian Cherry (Cornus mas) is a hardy, deciduous large shrub or small tree that typically grows to 4–6 metres tall, forming a rounded, spreading shape. In late winter to early spring, it produces clusters of bright yellow flowers on bare stems, providing one of the earliest sources of nectar and pollen for bees. By late summer to early autumn, glossy, olive-shaped red fruits develop, resembling small cherries and offering a unique sweet-sharp flavour when fully ripe.

Cornelian Cherry thrives in full sun or partial shade and prefers well-drained, moderately fertile soil, though it will tolerate a range of conditions once established. It is well suited to Ireland’s cool temperate climate and is fully hardy. The fruits are rich in vitamin C and antioxidants, making them excellent for jams, syrups, juices, and liqueurs. Suitable for food forests, hedgerows, or as a specimen tree, Cornus mas combines ornamental beauty with productive value, offering early seasonal interest and late-season harvest.

While partially self-fertile, planting two different Cornus mas varieties nearby will improve fruit production.

Growing instructions

Plant in full sun or partial shade in well-drained soil enriched with compost or well-rotted organic matter. Water regularly during the first growing season and during extended dry periods to help establish a deep root system. Apply a mulch of compost or leaf mould each spring to retain moisture and support soil health.

Minimal pruning is required; remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches in late winter after flowering to maintain shape and airflow. Cornelian Cherry is generally pest and disease resistant and requires little maintenance once established.

Harvest fruits in late summer to early autumn when they turn deep red and soften slightly. They can be eaten fresh when fully ripe or used in preserves, syrups, and baking.
