Worcesterberry (Ribes divaricatum) is offered here as a young plant, a hardy, thorny deciduous shrub closely related to the gooseberry, growing to around 1.5 to 2 m tall and wide. Small greenish flowers in spring give way to round, dark purple to black berries in mid to late summer, sharp and gooseberry-like in flavour, best cooked into jams, jellies, or pies. The shrub is naturally resistant to American gooseberry mildew, making it a low-fuss alternative to traditional gooseberries. Its dense, spiny growth also offers useful shelter for garden birds. A tough, productive choice for Irish and UK fruit gardens, hedgerows, and permaculture plantings.

Growing Instructions
Plant bare-root from November to March, or from a pot the rest of the year, in full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil; Worcesterberry tolerates poor or dry conditions once established. Water while establishing and mulch to retain moisture. Prune in winter to remove old or crossing wood, keeping the thorny framework open for easy picking. Harvest berries in mid to late summer once dark and slightly soft, and cook into jams or pies.
